The Real Cost of Horse Ownership

It is often said that if you ask a question to ten horse owners, you will get ten different answers. However, one thing we can all agree upon is that horses are expensive! Affording the initial purchase cost is the least of expenses. Calculating the maintenance costs over the horse's lifetime is a more realistic look at a long-term budgeting plan.

Across the country, questions of lack of accountability and poor communication kept surfacing. Board members resigned. Transparency was clouded. And when the name was changed from Equine Canada to Equestrian Canada, the backlash was significant. The name “Equine Canada” at least appeared to represent all of Canada’s 963,500 (give or take) horses, their owners, trainers, breeders, coaches, the industry, agriculture, the support companies, the sports community, and the wider network of sponsors.

Much like human sport competitions, irresponsible medication use and a positive drug test can cause serious problems for both the horse and rider at equine events. “If you’re competing in a horse sport, the first thing you need to know is whose rules you’re running under,” says Dr. Trisha Dowling, a board-certified specialist in veterinary pharmacology and large animal internal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). The veterinary professor is also a member of the Equine Medications Committee for Equestrian Canada (formerly known as Equine Canada).

Little has been known until now about effects of short, intense, powerful exercise on draft horses’ physiology - Draft horses competing in the Calgary Stampede’s Heavy Horse Pull are so strong they can pull a load five times their body weight — as much as 5,000 kilograms. The workload demands of this intensive competition are drastically different from other disciplines and little is known about how it affects the health of these giant equines.
