AN EXAMPLE OF TRUE CHANGE: GLORIA’S STORY

A little girl from one of our eight-week anti-bullying curriculums had come with seven other youth from her school. All eight kids had been to the principal’s office several times with issues, either from being a bully or from being bullied themselves. In addition, there were considerable behavioural issues including fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder, among others. Each time they came the youth were placed in teams of two with their teacher, the horse. But every time, her human teammate did not want to be Gloria’s partner and simply left her to do the program all by herself with the horse.

When Gloria began to work with the horse, Pass, on her own, she connected with him right away due to her stimulus. She and Pass were constantly eye to eye, and we could already see that they were opening up to each other. Pass followed Gloria’s every move and listened to her well. The other kids noticed and began to get jealous; before long, they went and took Pass away from Gloria. As facilitators, we had to let the process happen and not intervene. It’s up to our teachers to let us know if this is okay or not, and it took all the strength we had not to involve ourselves as we felt bad for little Gloria. It broke our hearts to see that the amazing, authentic connection she had with Pass was broken up so quickly. But when we listened to the horse’s body language, we understood that what was happening was okay.

Gloria quickly developed a genuine connection with every horse, and her journey was truly inspiring. Gloria is pictured with Pass. Photo courtesy of Equine Connection

On to the next horse. We couldn’t believe it — it happened again! Gloria and the next horse connected right away — eye to eye. And again, the other kids came and stole the horse from Gloria. Still, we stood back and let it happen. And it happened again and again.

Finally, by the eighth and last program, Gloria found the confidence she needed! Although the other kids had taken her horse several times, on the last day Gloria finally stood up for herself. She stomped her foot and said, “No! I am working with this horse.” We were all surprised at this turn of events, but because we had allowed the process to continue, Gloria had developed the assertiveness she needed to stand up for herself, to be the leader, and to say NO!

Watching this unfold was an amazing experience, but the story got even better. When the program ended, we went back into the classroom to finish the day with the debrief, during which the kids usually choose one word from the achievement board to talk about what their teacher (the horse) taught them, or how it reflected their day. But this time Gloria didn’t pick just one word, or even two words. She chose eight words!

When asked why she chose those words she listed them off, explaining each word and why she chose it. And to top it off, Gloria’s peers — who had previously bullied and ignored her — began to clap at her accomplishment and gave her a standing ovation. What an amazingly humble moment to witness! It was a true privilege to be part of little Gloria’s journey. Observing the changes taking place from the beginning of week one to the end of week eight is the reason we love our careers so much.

“The course is life changing! The extensive content and information provided during our training is absolutely astounding and allows you to hit the ground running! No reinventing the wheel and a very clear road map to your success!” — Sandi Baigent

“The depth of this course far exceeded my expectations. I did not expect to learn so much about horses and the role they play in helping humans develop. I have worked with horses for over 50 years and now have new insights that have changed the relationship I have with my herd.

This course also gave me a new understanding of the energy that moves in our bodies and how that effects our communication and interactions with others. I am looking forward to working with groups and helping them to develop and grow while working with my horses. This is a unique opportunity to really make a difference in people’s lives.” — Darlene Illi
