All Natural Premium Animal Bedding
PrimeBed is a new, environmentally and user-friendly bedding alternative to conventional straw or wood pellets.
PrimeBed is made from the inner fibre of flax. Once the flax seed is harvested, flax straw is processed to harvest the fibre from inside the stalk. The core flax fibre, also known as flax shives, is inside the flax stem and it is the shives that keep the plant rigid during its growth phase and seed production.
The shives represent some 70 percent of the content of the flax stem and its greatest value after harvesting is that it has a porous structure making it very absorbent and ideal as bedding.
PrimeBed is unique in that it absorbs liquids from the bottom of the bedding only, unlike wood or straw beddings that get wet on contact from the top down. When liquids make contact with PrimeBed, they quickly migrate to the base of the bed where they are absorbed horizontally, leaving the upper areas of the bed dry. It is light and airy, making it easy to manage and there is very little waste generated due to its unique absorbency – it can absorb up to five times its own weight. PrimeBed is also dust-free making it ideal for all horses and especially those susceptible to heaves.
Flax shives have been widely used in Europe as bedding for horses and livestock, and the bedding product is also produced in Canada. What makes it especially valuable is the fact that it does not burn – a huge safety factor - and that, as a natural organic material, it is biodegradable, CO2 neutral, renewable and sustainable.
PrimeBed is low PH and has the ideal carbon to nitrogen balance. It composts in six to eight weeks. It makes ideal fertilizer along with your own barn waste for pasture, hay meadows, lawns, and gardens.
